Syry Kubani cheese plant: chilled water down to 2 °C from a steam-fired Thermax absorption chiller

In brief. At a dairy plant in Krasnodar Territory, a 3,500 kW steam-fired Thermax absorption chiller cools water from 12 to 7 and from 6 to 2 °C, as the owner's letter confirms. The plant's energy center has four MTU gas engines.

At the Syry Kubani cheese plant in Vyselki (Krasnodar Territory), a 3,500 kW steam-fired Thermax lithium bromide absorption chiller is in operation. We supplied it and two NCT cooling towers and carried out installation supervision and commissioning. The chiller cools water in two modes, 12/7 and 6/2 °C. The plant's energy center has four MTU gas engine generator sets.

What was the task?

The plant needs chilled water for production and cooling for air conditioning part of the premises; the chiller works in two modes, 12/7 and 6/2 °C. The engineering logic is this: the plant has its own electricity from four gas engines, and a 3,500 kW compressor chiller would take hundreds of kilowatts of that electricity. An absorption chiller needs steam instead.

How does the scheme work?

Steam-fired chiller: a typical scheme

Steam comes to the absorption chiller, which makes chilled water for the plant. The heat of the chiller itself and the heat brought in with the steam are carried away by NCT cooling towers. The drawing shows a typical option with a heat recovery steam generator and does not describe where the steam at this plant comes from.

Engine exhaust passes through a heat recovery steam generator. The steam goes to the plant's processes and into a double-effect steam-fired Thermax chiller. Suits a plant that needs steam.

What was difficult?

Getting water at two temperatures, 12/7 and 6/2 °C, from one chiller. Commissioning confirmed the declared performance, and the plant's letter confirms an outlet of down to 2 °C. Technical details are not given in open materials.

What was the result?

The owner's letter of 4 August 2020 states: the equipment was delivered on time (the absorption chiller in 20 weeks, the cooling towers ahead of schedule), commissioning confirmed the declared performance, and the chiller cools water from 12 to 7 and from 6 to 2 °C. The cooling towers were delivered in November 2017, and the absorption chiller in December 2017.
