Teplichnoye Greenhouse Complex: Cooling from Gas Engine Heat

In brief. At a greenhouse complex in the village of Sadovy, two 400 kW Thermax LT 12 C absorption chillers supply water at 8.5/3.5 °C from gas engine and boiler house heat. The complex's energy efficiency is up to 92 %, payback 5 years.

The AO Teplichnoye greenhouse complex in the village of Sadovy got cooling from the heat of its own power plant. Two 400 kW Thermax LT 12 C lithium bromide absorption chillers run on hot water from gas engine generator sets and a boiler house and supply water at 8.5/3.5 °C. This is the first trigeneration (CCHP) for a greenhouse complex in Russia.

What was the task?

The complex's power plant runs in island mode: the substation is far away, and there is not enough electrical capacity or reserve. An electric chiller did not fit within the available capacity. Cooling is needed for packing, storage and the administrative building, so it is made from waste hot water from the engines and the boiler house.

How does the scheme work?

Greenhouse complex: carbon dioxide as well

A typical greenhouse energy center: the engine gives electricity, and the heat goes to heating and to the absorption machine. At Teplichnoye, the machines cover the cooling for packing and storage.

A typical greenhouse scheme: gas engines provide grow lights and heating, cleaned exhaust supplies CO₂ to the plants, and hot water through a Thermax chiller cools the packing area. This is how a greenhouse plant in the Sverdlovsk Region gets cooling down to 3.5 °C.

What was difficult?

The customer required +3.5 °C at the outlet: the packing area needs +12 °C. At the same time, the chiller plant runs without permanent staff. The machines were ordered for this mode, and the controls were built on freely programmable controllers, with remote monitoring and internet access. For the complex layout of the storage rooms, the cold air flow was optimized so that the temperature is even throughout the room.

What was the result?

The complex's energy efficiency is up to 92 %, and the payback period is 5 years. Delivery of the absorption chillers was completed in April 2018, and the NCT cooling towers were shipped in early 2018. The work was carried out under five contracts with one contractor, without subcontractors.
