Aktivny Komponent pharmaceutical plant — cooling from gas engine heat

In brief. At an active pharmaceutical ingredients plant in Pushkin, two 1,430 kW Thermax TAC L5 E3 absorption chillers run on jacket water from two Jenbacher J320 gas engines. In operation since June 2020.

At the Aktivny Komponent pharmaceutical plant in Pushkin, two Thermax TAC L5 E3 lithium bromide absorption chillers of 1,430 kW each produce cooling from the heat of two Jenbacher J320 gas engine generator sets. We developed the working documentation, supplied the equipment, and carried out installation supervision and commissioning. The system has been in operation since June 2020.

What was the task?

Cooling is needed for the process lines and permanently occupied rooms. The equipment was ordered under an investment contract for new production and modernization; the cooling source here is the engine jacket water.

How does the scheme work?

The classic: gas engines and hot water absorption chillers

Jacket water from the two gas engines heats the absorption chiller circuit. The chillers produce 12/7 °C water, and NCT cooling towers reject the heat.

The engine jacket and exhaust heat exchanger heat water to about 90 °C. The water goes through a heat exchanger into a single-effect Thermax chiller with a COP of about 0.8. The chiller supplies 7/12 °C water to the consumer and rejects heat to an NCT cooling tower. Surplus heat is removed by dump radiators.

What was the result?

The system has been in operation since June 2020; the absorption chillers were delivered in 2019. The materials give no figures on the effect.
