Mikran: trigeneration at an electronics plant

In brief. At the Mikran plant in Tomsk, two Thermax 5G 4L C absorption chillers of 1,100 kW each run on the waste heat of a 1.7 MW gas engine. In a letter, the owner noted delivery a month ahead of schedule.

The Mikran radio electronic equipment plant in Tomsk got an energy center operating in trigeneration (CCHP) mode: a 1.7 MW gas engine generator set and two Thermax 5G 4L C lithium bromide absorption chillers of 1,100 kW each. We supplied the machines and carried out installation supervision and commissioning. The plant was officially opened in November 2014.

What was the task?

The customer set strict reliability requirements. In summer the gas engine heat has nowhere to go, so it is used to make cooling for air conditioning.

How does the scheme work?

The classic: gas engine and a hot water absorption chiller

Hot water from the engine goes to single-effect Thermax machines, and 12/7 °C water goes to the plant's systems. Cooling towers reject the machines' heat.

The engine jacket and exhaust heat exchanger heat water to about 90 °C. The water goes through a heat exchanger into a single-effect Thermax chiller with a COP of about 0.8. The chiller supplies 7/12 °C water to the consumer and rejects heat to an NCT cooling tower. Surplus heat is removed by dump radiators.

What was difficult?

The main difficulty was coordinating the gas engine plant and the absorption chillers in the transition period and at low load: at low load the engine gives less heat, and the machine may not get enough. How this was solved is not described in the sources. The machine tubes are made of SS 430 Ti stainless steel instead of copper; the absorption chiller service life in the manufacturer's catalog is 20–25 years.

What was the result?

In a letter dated 15 October 2014, the owner of the energy center thanks us for delivering two Thermax absorption chillers and two cooling towers a full month ahead of schedule, despite a cargo delay caused by sanctions.
