Zydus Cadila, India

In brief. Three 1 MW Jenbacher engines and three Thermax machines give a pharmaceutical plant 3,058 kW of process and air-conditioning cooling.

The Zydus Cadila pharmaceutical plant gets its electricity from three GE Jenbacher engines, and their exhaust and jacket heat drive three Thermax absorption machines. The source notes lower operating costs and uninterrupted power supply.

What does the project consist of?

Parameter Value
Sector Pharmaceuticals
Engines 3 GE Jenbacher engines, 1 MW each
Fuel Natural gas
Heat for the machine Exhaust at 427 °C and jacket at 87 °C
Machine and cooling 3 machines of 1,020 kW (290 TR) each, 3,058 kW (870 TR) in total
What the cooling is for Process and air-conditioning cooling

Why is this example useful for a Russian site?

One machine per engine, 3 by 3. Losing one engine takes away a third of the electricity and cooling at once, so for process cooling the backup is sized for exactly that third, with grid supply and a chiller planned in advance. The roughly 30 minutes a machine needs to reach operating mode is also covered by the backup. More: trigeneration for pharmaceuticals.

How does this kind of scheme work?

The machine takes the engine exhaust and the jacket hot water directly and needs no separate heat exchangers.

The Thermax Trigenie machine takes two sources at once: exhaust gas with a COP of about 1.4 and jacket hot water with a COP of about 0.8. No separate heat recovery units are needed. The output is 7/12 °C water.
