Stücki Business Park, Basel, Switzerland

In brief. Two Thermax machines, a 3,500 kW double-effect and a 3,000 kW single-effect, cool a business park in Basel under an energy service contract.

Stücki Business Park in Basel gets its cooling from the IWB Powerbox: two Thermax absorption machines, 3,500 and 3,000 kW, run on hot water from biofuel power units. The operating terms are set by an energy service contract with the operator IWB.

Why is this example useful for a Russian site?

Here the cooling supply is set up as an energy service contract with the operator IWB, and the customer pays for the cooling. A scheme like this is compared by the price of a kilowatt-hour of cooling in the contract; the price of the machines is not the measure here. The contract should state from the start the water temperatures and the capacity the operator is obliged to maintain. More: trigeneration for business centers and hotels.

How does this kind of scheme work?

Hot water drives the machines. The diagram shows the single-effect version; in Basel a double-effect machine also runs alongside it.

The engine jacket and exhaust heat exchanger heat water to about 90 °C. The water goes through a heat exchanger into a single-effect Thermax chiller with a COP of about 0.8. The chiller supplies 7/12 °C water to the consumer and rejects heat to an NCT cooling tower. Surplus heat is removed by dump radiators.
