Sanjiban Hospital near Kolkata, India

In brief. Six engines running on gas from wood gasifiers send their heat to two Thermax chillers, and 1,300 kW of cooling covers a 300-bed hospital.

Sanjiban Hospital near Kolkata, India

A 300-bed hospital near Kolkata is supplied by six 250 kW engines that run on gas from wood gasifiers. The exhaust and jacket water drive two Thermax absorption chillers. Surplus electricity is sold to the grid, and the project received a government ministry subsidy.

What does the project consist of?

Parameter Value
Industry Healthcare, 300-bed hospital
Engines 6 engines, 250 kW each
Fuel Gas from wood gasifiers (wood chips, sawdust)
Heat for the chiller Exhaust at 480 °C and jacket water at 89 °C
Chiller and cooling 2 chillers of 185 TR each, 1,300 kW (370 TR) in total
What the cooling is for Hospital air conditioning

Why is this example useful for a Russian site?

Gas from wood chips and sawdust gives 480 °C exhaust and 89 °C jacket water: these are normal conditions for the chiller, and selection works the same way as for natural gas. Six 250 kW engines give 1,300 kW of cooling. Here the economics were supported by the subsidy and the sale of surplus power to the grid. Without them, as in our feasibility study models, the calculation will be different. More: biogas, coal mine gas and associated petroleum gas.

How does this kind of scheme work?

Gas from the gasifiers fuels the engines, and their heat is turned into cooling.

Biogas goes into a gas engine after cleaning. Part of the heat returns to the digester, the rest goes into a Thermax chiller. Heat that would otherwise be lost produces cooling.
