Fiumicino Airport, Rome, Italy
In brief. Heat from Rolls-Royce engines, as hot water at 130 °C, gives three terminals in Rome 16,000 kW of cooling through four Thermax chillers.

At Rome's Fiumicino Airport, heat from Rolls-Royce engines in the form of hot water drives four Thermax absorption chillers. Together they give 16,000 kW of cooling and air-condition three terminals.
What does the project consist of?
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Industry | Airport |
| Engines | Rolls-Royce (number and output not given in the source) |
| Fuel | Not specified |
| Heat for the chiller | Hot water at 130 °C |
| Chillers and cooling | 4 hot-water chillers: 2 × 1,280 TR and 2 × 995 TR, 16,000 kW (4,550 TR) in total |
| What the cooling is for | Air conditioning of three terminals |
Why is this example useful for a Russian site?
Four chillers of two sizes instead of one large unit give capacity steps: at low load only some of them run, and stopping one chiller takes away 22–28 % of the cooling. The chillers themselves modulate smoothly from 10 to 100 %, so the steps here are needed mainly for maintenance and backup. More: trigeneration with gas engines.
How does this kind of scheme work?
Hot water at 130 °C from the engines drives the chillers.
