Revel Casino, Atlantic City, USA

In brief. Hot water heated by the exhaust of an 8 MW turbine drives two Thermax 5G series machines; the casino gets about 7,100 kW of cooling.

At the Revel Casino complex, an 8 MW Solar Taurus turbine heats water to 107 °C with its exhaust, and this water drives two Thermax 5G series absorption chillers. They give about 7,100 kW of cooling for the casino. According to the source, the savings are 12,447 MWh per year.

What does the project consist of?

Parameter Value
Industry Casino hotel
Engines Solar Taurus 70 gas turbine, 8 MW
Fuel Natural gas
Heat for the machine Hot water at 225 °F (about 107 °C) heated by the turbine exhaust
Machine and cooling 2 machines of the 5G 8N C series, about 7,100 kW (2,030 TR) in total
What the cooling is for Air conditioning of a 14,000 m² casino

Why is this example useful for a Russian site?

The turbine exhaust could drive a double-effect machine with a COP of about 1.4. On 107 °C water the 5G machine runs at 0.75–0.80, which means almost half the cooling from the same heat. In return, the machine can be placed farther from the turbine: it is fed by water pipes, not by an exhaust duct. The two options are compared in money terms. More: trigeneration (CCHP) on gas turbines.

How does this kind of scheme work?

The turbine exhaust heats water, and the water drives single-effect 5G machines. The diagram shows an engine; for a turbine the cooling circuit is the same.

The engine jacket and exhaust heat exchanger heat water to about 90 °C. The water goes through a heat exchanger into a single-effect Thermax chiller with a COP of about 0.8. The chiller supplies 7/12 °C water to the consumer and rejects heat to an NCT cooling tower. Surplus heat is removed by dump radiators.
