Paramount Pictures, Los Angeles, USA

In brief. Four 250 kW microturbines heat water, and one Thermax machine turns it into about 800 kW of cooling for the studio offices.

The Paramount Pictures offices get their electricity from four 250 kW Flex Energy microturbines. Hot water from their exhaust drives one 230 TR Thermax absorption machine. According to the case study, the savings are 550,000 kWh per year.

What does the project consist of?

Parameter Value
Sector Film studio, offices
Engines 4 Flex Energy microturbines, 250 kW each
Fuel Natural gas
Heat for the machine Hot water from the exhaust, cooled from 90.5 to 73.2 °C
Machine and cooling 1 machine, about 800 kW (230 TR)
What the cooling is for Office air conditioning

Why is this example useful for a Russian site?

About 800 kW of cooling from 1,000 kW of electrical capacity: 0.8 kW of cooling per kW of electricity via hot water. Water at 90.5/73.2 °C gives a 17 K difference, so the heating water flow is small. This benchmark works for a first estimate on microturbines; after that, the calculation is done from the datasheet. More: trigeneration on microturbines.

How does this kind of scheme work?

In the diagram, the microturbine exhausts are collected in a common header and go straight to the machine; in Los Angeles their heat first heats water.

Several microturbines produce electricity; their exhaust is collected in a common header and goes into an exhaust-fired Thermax chiller. The scheme is used in buildings and data centers.
