HuaiNan (Panyi) Coal Mine, China
In brief. Coal mine methane fuels two Deutz engines, and their exhaust and jacket heat becomes 3,023 kW of cooling for the mine at 1,000 m.

At the HuaiNan coal mine, two 1.4 MW Deutz engines run on coal mine methane. All of the exhaust and jacket heat goes to a single 3,023 kW Thermax absorption chiller, which air-conditions the mine at a depth of 1,000 m.
What does the project consist of?
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Industry | Coal mining |
| Engines | 2 Deutz engines, 1.4 MW each |
| Fuel | Coal mine methane |
| Heat for the chiller | Exhaust at 525 °C and jacket water at 85 °C |
| Chillers and cooling | 1 chiller, 3,023 kW (860 TR) |
| What the cooling is for | Air conditioning of the mine at a depth of 1,000 m |
Why is this example useful for a Russian site?
Exhaust and jacket heat from two 1.4 MW engines give 3,023 kW of cooling. If the chiller sits on the surface and the cooling is needed at a depth of 1,000 m, the water column creates about 100 bar, while the chiller is rated for 8 kgf/cm². The circuits must be separated by a heat exchanger. For a Russian mine this is the first check, even before the methane calculation. More: biogas, coal mine gas and associated petroleum gas.
How does this kind of scheme work?
Mine gas fuels the engine, and its heat is turned into cooling.
