Doherty Engineering, Brantford, Canada

In brief. Hot water and 8 bar steam from one turbine drive two Thermax chillers, which together give the office building about 1,900 kW of cooling.

Doherty Engineering, Brantford, Canada

At the office of a Canadian engineering company, a 4.6 MW gas turbine produces electricity, and its heat is used in two ways: hot water drives one Thermax absorption chiller, and 8 bar steam drives the other. Savings are 3,373 MWh per year, and the plant efficiency is about 90 %.

What does the project consist of?

Parameter Value
Industry Engineering company, office
Engines Quattro-Gen gas turbine, 4.6 MW
Fuel Natural gas
Heat for the chiller Hot water (203 °F, about 95 °C) and 8 bar steam
Chillers and cooling 2 chillers: 180 TR on hot water and 370 TR on steam, about 1,900 kW (550 TR) in total
What the cooling is for Building air conditioning

Why is this example useful for a Russian site?

The heat of one turbine is split by temperature: 8 bar steam goes to the steam-fired chiller, and water at about 95 °C goes to the hot-water chiller. On steam, a double-effect chiller gives almost twice as much cooling from the same kilowatt of heat, and the steam chiller here is twice as large. A plant that has steam should start the calculation with it. More: trigeneration with gas turbines.

How does this kind of scheme work?

A heat recovery steam generator is installed after the turbine. In the diagram, steam goes to the steam-fired chiller and hot water to the heating network; in Brantford, the water also works for cooling.

A heat recovery steam generator sits after the turbine. It supplies steam to a steam-fired Thermax chiller and hot water to the heating network. One source covers both heat and cooling.
